Research

Dr Abolfazl Zahedi’s research focuses on structural integrity, mechanical metamaterials, and the development of advanced engineering systems capable of performing reliably under complex real-world loading conditions. His vision is to advance mechanical engineering science through the integration of computational modelling, materials engineering, and experimental mechanics, enabling the prediction and optimisation of in-service performance for next-generation components and devices. He is particularly interested in how engineered micro-architectures and architected materials can be designed to enhance mechanical behaviour, durability and functionality in demanding applications, including biomedical, aerospace, and structural systems. Dr Zahedi’s work combines multiscale modelling, computational solid mechanics and experimental validation to investigate how tailored material architectures can improve performance under multiaxial, impact and dynamic loading. His core expertise includes: 1- Multiscale modelling and simulation of advanced materials and architected structures 2- Design and optimisation of engineered material architectures for enhanced mechanical performance 3- Impact, fatigue and dynamic loading analysis across a range of engineering components 4- Mechanics of composite and multifunctional materials
